Newly purchased Macintosh computers had System 7 installed and were often bundled with software such as HyperCard, At Ease and Mouse Practice. Unlike earlier systems, System 7 itself did not come bundled with major software packages. Basilisk II is distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL). However, you still need a copy of MacOS and a Macintosh ROM image to use Basilisk II. That is, it allows you to run 68k MacOS software on your computer, even if you are using a different operating system. System 7 was the first Apple operating system to be available on CD, although it shipped on a set of 15 floppy disks initially. Basilisk II is an Open Source 68k Macintosh emulator.
